Isabella's Whimsy

handmade with love

Beginning to think about Christmas

With IsabellasWhimsy on Etsy I spend a lot of time looking at Etsy and seeing some pretty fun handmade items.  So this week on the blog I want to show you 3 Christmas items for your home, or for gifts, that I hope you will like.

First a hand made quilted tree skirt from PeggyGaylerDesigns.

After her wonderful, whimsical village is appliqued to the tree skirt foundation,  Peggy takes a lot of time with machine quilting a sky full of snowballs. The end result is a high quality family tradition for you. I encourage you to visit PeggyGaylerDesigns on Etsy to see all of her Christmas creations and many other lovely quilts for all year.

Next is a 12.5″ tall Scandinavian Reindeer from HappyDollsbyLesya.

Lesya has touched my heart with her sweet Christmas decorations, dolls, and creatures. I can see that she is well admired and has a successful shop. How does she manage to stuff those little arms and legs? She must be a very careful creator. All of her dolls and toys are made of cloth. You will be happily surprised at their appealing little faces when you visit HappyDollsbyLesya on Etsy.

The last Christmas item this week is from my own IsabellasWhimsy.

This is a set of 4 quilted coasters made with Scandinavian design fabric. They are 4.5″ square and come packaged in a celo bag tied with red and white baker’s twine. Just add a gift card or open and use yourself. I plan to add more Christmas items, so visit IsabellasWhimsy on Etsy to see if I have just what you are looking for.

Thank you for stopping by.

Fun Productivity

It’s my own Show-and-Tell day!

You may remember these mug rugs that I made last year…isabellaswhimsymushrooms2 cute, but nothing to write home about, or to even take home.  So I tried to step it up a notch. With a little snipping and stitching came up with these, now available in my Etsy shop.

And let’s not forget the holidays before Christmas and the whole season of Autumn. Here is my Patchwork Pumpkin

Thanks for looking. I love Show-and-Tell!

Bundle is Bundled up and ready to go!

One of my customers sent a request for 10 Yellow Sunshine Mug Rugs to give as teacher gifts at Christmas.  I’m happy to say they are all bundled and ready to go in the mail.

Would you like a gift to give or to keep? Let me know!

Scrappy Baby Quilt – It’s an Elephant!

I know you have all been breathlessly waiting for this reveal… {drum roll}… and here it is… the Scrappy Pink Elephant Baby Quilt!

This was such a fun quilt to make. Want to know how?

♥ Collect your pink scraps along with some purples and a bit of gray. Cut them all 2/5″ wide, no matter the length.

♥ Sew them together, two-by-two, then cut them apart in sections of 2 or 3 or 4 fabrics. Just look and decide what you want the lengths to be and keep stitching pieces together.

♥ You need 7 rows of pieces, about 25-26″ (64-66cm) long; one short row for the top of the head about 9″ (23cm) long. The tail 6″ (15cm) and each of the 4 legs 7″ (18cm) are made of2 fabrics stitched together . The trunk was the trickiest part with 4 pieces stitched end-to-end 9″ (23cm) long and one additional piece stitched to the side for the curve in the trunk about 3.5″ (9cm).

♥ I looked at a few clip arts, coloring books, and a similar non-scrappy quilt, then drew my elephant outline on a 36″ square piece of craft paper (I have a roll for just such activities).

♥ Cut out the big elephant (the pattern now) and pin it to the scrappy fabric you made. I folded the pattern back from the tail, legs, and trunk and cut out around the body. To add the legs, tail and trunk I fiddled around with the pattern, body and short pieces, then stitched the short pieces in place and finished by cutting around them for the final shape.

♥ Make the quilt sandwich with the backing print, the batting, and the Kona white cotton quilt top cut the width of the fabric X about 40″. I spray basted them together and pressed them with the iron and left them flat for a few hours. Hmmm…I could have done that before sewing the scrappy fabric…

♥ The first quilting stitches I made were through all layers along each horizontal seam line in the scrappy elephant. Next I added simple quilting lines spaced 2.5″ (6cm) apart, running from the top to the bottom of the quilt, securing the batting. I used a wide machine blanket stitch to applique around the elephant; the applique was done with a shiny European thread that adds a hint of bling.

♥ Square up and bind in your favorite way and voila – your scrappy elephant quilt.

ORRRR, you can purchase it in the IsabellasWhimsy shop on Etsy and I’ll send it to you without delay!

As long as my scraps last I will be happy to make another elephant in various colors. I’m also about to make a similar whale quilt.

New Quilt – Sea Creatures and 2 Mermaids

IsabellasWhimsy TriangleSea Creatures

Coral Queen of the Sea, quilt #2

Worked this weekend and took pics today as soon as the rain let up. It’s a finish!

This sweet quilt is 36: X 48″ (91.5cm X 122cm), a lovely size for a baby, a little girl, a beach house throw, a recliner or wheelchair lap quilt.  I could go on and on…because I am crazy about this pretty fabric. Coral Queen of the Sea was produced this season by Moda, one of the top fabric makers in the US. All the prints are from this collection. The white and deep teal binding are Kona Cottons, very popular with quilters.

The prints feature several whimsical sea creatures such as whales, dolphins, jellyfish, puffer fish, sea horses, star fish (sea stars), squid, fishies, and the pink / coral triangles have a couple of shy mermaids swimming. The backing is one large piece of the sea creatures fabric.

This sweetie is finished in time to enter the QQQ Etsy Team’s Quilt of the Month Challenge. Entries must be posted by this evening (CST) and then voting begins and goes until the end of the month. The winning quilt will be used by the team through the month of September as our logo on all of our sites across the internet. That gives the winning shop lots of visibility.

If you want to see more pics and read the description, click here.

If you love it and want to pin it, here’s a pin ready for you:

I’ve got fabric to make 2 more quilts in different styles…yes, that’s how much I like it!

Thanks for stopping by.

Books, Travels and Row by Row Experience

Today is National Book Lovers Day, and that makes today special to me! Some of my friends, my sister, my daughter and I have formed our own 2016 Reading Challenge group on Facebook. We are using the popular SugarPop Challenge list. Some of us did the 2015 Challenge with more or less completion (my sister was the only one to finish last year). I think what we liked most was being prompted to try out new types of books.  We made some great finds in new authors, and a few sad finds in books to avoid (most notably the Pulitzers that we read). So with 4-5 months left to go, my sister has completed all the categories. Some just aren’t into it…at. all. I’m about halfway done; I keep getting side-tracked by additional books of new authors I find – and that’s nice.

Travels and the Row by Row Experience

Last summer while visiting my sister in Oregon and becoming acquainted with more of the new-to-me San Antonio area, I visited many quilt shops to collect their Row by Row Experience quilt patterns*. The Row by Row Experience is essentially a marketing campaign for LQSs (Local Quilt Shops), and quilters love it! This year all 50 states, all the Canadian provinces (I think), and even some European countries are participating in this amazing project.  Unlike last year when I collected 21+ row patterns, this year I am way too busy with IsabellasWhimsy on Etsy, so my collection will be MUCH smaller and only rows that I really, really like.

So this year I have gone to two Texas towns, New Braunfels and Bandera, and collected 2 row patterns. I still have a list with 4 remaining possible shops. Here are the patterns I have. I’m likin’ the Texan style here! Yaahoo!

Please know you are invited to visit Isabella’s Whimsy on Facebook and on Pinterest.

I’ll leave you with a sneak peek of the current baby quilt on my worktable,

Until next time,

Blessings to All,

*If you want to see the 2015 rows I collected look here, here, and here.

zizzybob’s Linky Party!

zizzybob avatar

Fellow-quilter and QQQ Etsy Team member zizzybob has opened a Linky Party. Don’t know what that is? People who make handcrafted items are invited to post a link to one of their items on a designated page.

zizzybob’s blog is found on Blogger and is called Sweet Little Gems. Here is what she says about this week’s Linky Party:

Linky Party Week 3

Do you have a shop on Etsy, Zibbet, Artfire, Zazzle or maybe your own website? Want some free promotion? Would you like another backlink? Let’s see what you have. Add a link or two and join the party.
The way I read this, you, dear Reader, are welcome to link to this Linky Party if you can answer YES! to her first question above. So come on! Link up for some free promotion and a chance to see other handcrafted items from your fellow crafters.
————————- ♥
I’ve been keeping busy with some private orders, so haven’t added to the shop this week. I did renew a Western Baby Burp Cloth and a Hanukkah Baby Bib and Washcloth set. I’m getting ready to renew the Scandi Baby Burp and Bib Gift Set.

I will be adding a Western Baby Bib and Western Baby Snuggly Blanket as soon as I get some good pics. And when I can, I’m planning a Scandi Baby Snuggly and Scandi Baby Quilt.

Meanwhile, plans for this week are to finish up a pretty lap quilt for the shop, start a baby quilt for my October 2016 grandson (!!!), and try to add at least one new item to Isabella’s Whimsy on Etsy as well as prep 2 multi-item Christmas orders.

Please stop by the shop and let me know what you like by clicking on ♥s.

And if you are on Facebook, I’d love for you to stop by Isabella’s Whimsy there too.

Etsy Shop Addition

shells beach

Hope everyone has been enjoying their summer, even if it’s winter where you are.  I stalled off admitting summer as long as I could, but we are in the midst of it now!  When I want to forget the heat I zone out and fill my mind with lovely beach scenes and play with my shell collection.  This summer I also found some beautiful beach and sea creatures fabric and made a sweet baby quilt.

Today the quilt became part of Isabella’s Whimsy on Etsy.

Wishing you a joyful summer (or winter) week!

Etsy Teams and Me

Do you know that when you are an Etsy seller one of the benefits available to you is Etsy Teams?  There are all kinds of teams in Etsy, probably thousands of them.  I am a member of 8.5 teams, well, really it’s 9 teams. Each one has its own purpose. Let me tell you about them.

My primary team is Quilts, Quilts, Quilts! No surprise to you it is a team of quilters and quilt related shops. I am a team leader with a fellow QQQ member to promote our team shops on our Facebook page. Every day we post a shop on Facebook to help give our team members visibility. Other than that I participate in the team Chat on nearly a daily basis and have formed friendships with several very nice, supportive and fun people. This team also offers promotion games. The .5 team I mentioned is the QQQ – Team Leaders team, where we discuss behind-the-scenes plans for the team.

Texas Blubonnets

The Texas Friends Team is another sociable and promoting team. I participate in the Chat very often and primarily joined the team to be in touch with other Etsians who live in Texas. I enjoy the banter and support of this group.

IsabellasWhimsy 2016 Word

Team UNITY and A Fairly Promo are teams I turn to just for promotional games and activities.  Contrary to the Texas Friends Team, these two are very international.

Being found on Etsy is a game itself. I do what I can to be visible, but there is a big randomness factor controlled by Etsy that I just cannot do anything about.

Similarly to the TX Friends, I joined the Create in Christ Team to interact with people who share an important part of my life. In addition to games there is a prayer thread. We pray about anything and everything, striving to put Christ as the center of our lives and businesses.  This team, as well as QQQ and TXFriends, is supportive to my shop and to me personally.

A small team that is new this year is Etsy Mastermind. This team is for women who are in business. We share business information, critique each others shops, swap social media addresses, and set goals together. This team helps me address areas that are very helpful to my business, such as goal setting.

Another business-minded team is Etsy Rank. The team is for people who use the program. The program analyzes our shops and checks for searchable keywords. It has been a big help to me in improving my SEO skills.

IsabellasWhimsy Scandi Birds

And last of all is a “luxury” team, Scandinavian Folk Art, a team that lets me see and enjoy one of my likes…Scandinavian folk art! It’s not an active team, but I like it.

I enjoy these teams and am not joining any others for now. I feel a commitment to each team to participate in their activities regularly, every week, or several times a week. We help each other in different ways, and the teams make the Etsy experience a community.

If you would like to join an Etsy Team there are scads to choose from. You do not need to have a shop, you can join many teams as a shopper. How can you find a team? I suggest that you go to a shop that you like, click on the owner’s name and look at the teams he/she is on. The teams are listed below the About section on their Profile page. Here’s mine.

Sending Etsy Good Wishes to You,

Hello? Hello? Can you hear me now?

Sorry for the communication lag…I’ve been out of range.

In one pic, here is what has been occupying my time these last months, my sweet grandson and quilting for Isabella’s Whimsy on Etsy.

My grandson turned 2 in May and he literally can outrun me. He loves to watch airplanes fly by, to throw balls of every size, and line up all his vehicles in a game we call Parking Valet.

However, I am managing to keep up with Isabella’s Whimsy. Very happy with the sales, love my Teams, and getting good at making Treasuries.

Here are a few items that I have made and sold…just to pique your interest.

My best seller

IsabellasWhimsy square pic from Etsy

Yellow Sunshine Mug Rug (9″ x 6.5″ / 23cm x 16.5 cm)

IsabellasWhimsy Star Wars

Star Wars, Millenium Falcon Cockpit Mug Rug (8″ x 6″ / ~20cm x 15cm) and for sewists the same mug rug as a pattern

IsabellasWhimsy boy mouse mug rug

Boy Mouse Mug Rug (9″ x 7″ / ~ 23cm x 18cm)

All the baby quilts have sold, so I’m working on a Mermaid fabric Bricks pattern. Hopefully it will be in the shop by the end of the week.  Here is a little sneak peek.

IsabellasWhimsy Mermaid Bricks

Again, sorry to have been away for so long.

A couple of new followers and Likes have encouraged me to get with it – Thank you!

I’m not very good at goals, but my new goal is to post once a week, every week…now which day?
